Freedom Summer 2011

I just got back from teaching my Freedom Summer 2011 Civil Rights Tour of the South. We took part in the Freedom Riders Reunion in Jackson, Mississippi and met others in Montgomery, Alabama.  I'm excited to post photos and invite all the class members to join the Gandhi King Community.  I have limited internet access right now, so more later.

Peace,

Monica

Good Governance is NOT Taking Sleeping People by Surprise

Anti-corruption movements have now caught the attention of people all over the world. People around the world are not tolerant anymore to lopsided accumulation of wealth by the few who have the opportunity to govern a country and the audacity and clout to stockpile money at home and abroad. During recent times we saw Anna Hazare coming out successful in convincing the Government to draft a bill. He also had to start the whole effort with a fast and had to pass lot of hurdles. Thank…

If Mahatma Gandhi was alive and was an Indian Politician

I was always of the strong view that Indian politics would never have been in this state of affairs if Mahatma Gandhi would have been alive today. We would have been the real example of democracy for new nations getting into democracy. For some time after we won independence, say for about two decades, we did have politicians of pristine qualities like Lal Bahadur Shastri, Kamaraj, C. Subramaniam, who had followed Gandhian principles in politics. Today there is so much of money in…

update on "Shanti Now" Nonviolent Peace Mission in Libia

On march 26 I have sent an email to Arya Bushan Bhardwaj , the Founder of Gandhi In Action International….

Dear Arya, I have been following the evolution of the situation in Libia and

felt compelled  to think of something that could be done as Gandhi In Action in

Europe... Shall we protest? and organize some sort of "stop the war"

manifestation? Are there groups and NGOs moving in that direction we can join

and support?... After some search on the web, I…

India Census 2011

The results of the India Census 2011 are just out this afternoon.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the whole team at the Registrar General’s Office have to be commended for the swiftness in completion of the job. It looks like as if the enumerator had visited me only a few weeks back and presto here are the results. As a responsible citizen it is also my duty to congratulate the thousands who had walked from door to door to do the enumeration work and the back-office staff for the…

The U.S. Anti-Apartheid Movement: A History

Hello,

I am a senior American Studies major here at Stanford and recently took Dr. Carson's class on "The Modern Tradition of Nonviolent Resistance." As part of the final project for the class, I researched the history of the U.S. Anti-Apartheid Movement, charting a number of the various grassroots organizations and efforts which comprised it in the lead-up to the 1986 passage of the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, as well as looking more broadly at U.S. foreign policy towards… Continue
