The Gandhi-King Community

For Global Peace with Social Justice in a Sustainable Environment

I just got back from teaching my Freedom Summer 2011 Civil Rights Tour of the South. We took part in the Freedom Riders Reunion in Jackson, Mississippi and met others in Montgomery, Alabama.  I'm excited to post photos and invite all the class members to join the Gandhi King Community.  I have limited internet access right now, so more later.

Peace,

Monica

I added my Freedom Summer photos of Nashville, our first stop. Who are the Freedom Summer students?  They are12 Indiana University South Bend students taking my Civil Rights History Study Tour class, which lasted two weeks at the end of the month of May.  We went from Nashville to Birmingham to Selma to Montgomery to Jackson to Indianola to Memphis on a charter bus.  Two other leaders, David James, M.L.S. and Dr. Kevin James, Sociology, accompanied the group.   In Nashville, we met Dr. Larry Isaac, Dr. Dan Cornfield and Dr. Earl Dickerson at Vanderbilt University.  They set the stage for a great rest of the tour by explaining the significance of the Nashville movement the students like John Lewis, Diane Nash, Bernard Lafayette, Catherine Burks Brooks and others to the whole movement and why Nashville fostered such a well-trained and non-violent leadership through the work of Rev. James Lawson.
