i’m a feminist, and strongly feel that men too can be feminists. i’ve built myself brick by brick with the support of certain key people in my life. I never got things easily in life. For even small things I had to struggle, but I never wilted doing so. Every achievement for me has been hard won. There is no word failure for me. My experiences have taught me the essence of “they win, who won, always have”. Many acquaintances of mine thought this expression was far from reality. And for them I had to include what was meant by it: “for defeat won over, victory is”. To sum it, I’m a deeply loving, caring, nurturing, sensitive, creative, extrovert, profoundly spiritual … person. I’ve a dream of a world where there are no boundaries, where love throbs in the heart of each one of us for everyone, where peace reigns, where life is supreme and none destitute, where there’s plenty for all and not just limited for a few, where there’s joy, where all colours are regarded beautiful … I live my dream every moment.
I love writing: poems, experiences, understandings…, travelling, reading, singing, sharing, learning from everyone …
i’m guided by Gandhi’s last person. i seek sustenance through the writings of Buddha, Epictetus, Rabindranath Tagore, Gandhi, Khalil Gibran, Rumi, Hazrat Inayatullah Khan, Dr. (Rev.) Martin Luther King, Jr., Jiddu Krishnamurti, Richard Bach, Prem Chand, Kabir, Mira Bai, Simone de Beauvoir, Shaheed Ram Prasad Bismil, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Erich Fromm, Eknath Easwaran, Thich Nhat Hanh, …
By the way indu means moon. Is moon anything without sun? So my name is an acronym for me, standing for: i need u.
My biological family includes my 80+ parents (Sarla Devi Singh and Wg Cdr. D D. Singh {retd}), my three other brothers and a sister, with me being the youngest (20.7.1959). My wife Renuka, a professional social worker and myself have two children: Pragya (7 years) and Manav (15 years). My social family excludes none!
The Professional dimension
indu prakash singh is working as the Head, Capacity Building in PRAXIS – Institute for Participatory Practices. Till, October 2008 he was the National Theme Leader, Shelters & Housing (Urban Poor/ Informal Sector) with ActionAid International –India (AAI-I).
Since the inception of Aashray Adhikar Abhiyan (AAA), a programme of AAI-I in 2000 – working to ensure the shelter rights of the homeless in Delhi -- he has been its Director. And, was there till, May 2003. From June 2003, he moved into AAI-I, to replicate the Delhi experience in other cities. This campaign is now active in over15 cities, including Delhi (like: Mumbai, Nasik, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Pune, Guwahati). ActionAid International – India works in over 40 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. AAI-I has 13 regional offices in India and works with women, dalits, tribals, Muslims, fisherfolk, children, disabled, people living with and affected by HIV & AIDS and the urban poor, through the human rights based themes: women’s rights, education, food rights and livelihood, HIV & AIDs, Governance, shelters and housing, and peace and justice. AAI believes in ending poverty, together. Through the leadership of the rights bearers.
He was chosen as “Person of the Year, 2003” by the First City magazine. On 20th Jan 2008, indu was featured by The Indian Express on its Real Page 3, in The Sunday Newsline
indu became part of the Women’s movement from 1982 onwards, after his friend’s sister, Madhu Khosla (nee Jhanji) was burnt to death in 1980. He is an author of four books on Women’s issue: Women’s Oppression, Men Responsible; Women, Law and Social Change in India (London & New Delhi); Indian Women: The Captured Beings; Indian Women: The Power Trapped. He is the co-author of Delhi: A Tale of Two Cities and four other publications. He has written numerous articles in journals, magazines, newspapers etc. He also has edited over 50 publications (including training manuals) and been Editor of Health for the Millions magazine (1994-96), Co-traveller, Yaadein…
indu has done MA in Philosophy (Delhi University), MA in Sociology (Jamia Millia Islamia) and M.Phil. in Sociology (Jawaharlal Nehru University). He won the gold medal in Jamia and topped in JNU as well. He qualified the UGC JRF/ Lecturership Eligibility Test. In 1989 he won the Commendation of International Sociological Association (President: Margaret Archer) in the Worldwide Competition for Young Sociologists for an academic paper entitled, “Beyond the Feminist Theories : Towards a Paradigm for Understanding / Ameliorating Women’s Situation.”
Having volunteered, in voluntary organisations since 1987 he joined the voluntary sector from 1993, having taught earlier in DU, Jamia and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). indu is a poet too. He was awarded Editor’s Choice Award of International Library of Poetry, USA in August 2002 and March 2003 for poems: One In All (Published in Honesty Awakened) and Grass Voice (Published in The Best Poems and Poets of 2002 ), respectively.

i strongly believe that non-violence is the only way to all our problems: personal, social, political...
i was fortunate to meet Martin Luther King III, the lovely son of my favourite Dr. (Rev.) Martin Luther King, Jr. on 17th Feb 2009 at Gandhi - King Plaza, IIC New Delhi. Thank you Suhas Borker, for inviting me. But for you, i would have missed this important event.
On 16th Feb 2009 i was invited by the Visionary, Virendra (SAM) Singh of Pardada Pardadi Educational Society (courtesy Renuka), to Siri Fort to listen to Jazz & Blues in honour of the 50th Anniversary of King's pilgrimage to India.
On my way out from the Sports Day on 17th Feb at the Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan i read something very significant: "There is no way to peace. Peace is the way." How true.
Let's all commit ourselves to the path shown by Gandhi & King.
As depth, runs through, every drop of the ocean. Love, runs through all of us. And bind us together to create a new world, full of love, friendship, joy, health, peace...
