Why are you interested in the Gandhi-King Community?
I was celebrating my 6th birthday on April 4, 1968 with my family. I still remember how upset they were at the terrible news that day that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. Years later the examples of Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi inspired me to move to India and help people there. I've lived in India (except for a few years in the UK doing fundraising for India) for most of the last 23 years. I've had the great privilege of learning so much about Gandhi's heart and work by being in this great country, and also seeing the enduring impact of his example. Harris Wofford, who as a young man visited India and learned about Gandhi, and formed part of the link between MLK and Gandhi, is a personal hero of mine. Seeing Barack Obama elected President to me fulfills in my own country the Gandhian ideals that Mr. King lived out and spoke about. To see Mr. King's "I have a dream" speech come true in the life of his children (at least in part) is incredibly moving to me.

Our charity has about 520 employees in India, caring for orphans, leprosy patients, and widows; providing education to slum children; providing training to young people; and providing public health services to large slums. We also work in several neighboring countries. Gandhi's work with leprosy patients was a real inspiration for our early work in that area (which continues to this day in Delhi and Chennai).

Clayborne Carson thought it would be good for me to share with the community about my time with Shanti Ghosh in New Delhi. I work here helping the poor, and besides Gandhi and MLK, Senator Harris Wofford is one of my heroes. At the age of 88 Shanti Ghosh, who lives in New Delhi, India, is just as bright and lucid as someone might be in their 30s. Shanti and her late husband Sudhir Ghosh lived through an… Continue
