the dc project is a growing and dedicated collective currently creating a model green jobs training partnership and a model training curriculum with the low income and no income residents of the Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV) homeless shelter. The education partnerships being implemented reflect the mission and vision of CCNV. As this effort aims to be a model and replicable program we are developing a curriculum, in conjunction with local academic institutions, Non- Profit Organizations ( NPOs) and foundations that address a wide range of viable green collar opportunities. Stimulus funding, in the form of block community grants, will provide funding. The nature of the stimulus funds and the severity of our economic crisis requires that we engage this project rapidly and be “shovel ready.” To address this, on March 25th we will be having a kick-off meeting for all of the partners involved. the dc project is slated to open the Model Green Technology Training Program in the Mitch Snyder Arts and Education Center on Memorial Day 2009.
We are community organizers and staffers from numerous departments of the Obama for President Campaign, consultants, green technology experts, local businesses, and political leaders. We employ sound and proven community organizing strategies that build capacity for local and national green partnerships. Community building and field outreach is a necessary component for a green community; it strengthens the social need for green collar employment while it instills the practical need for it as well. the dc project is working on behalf of CCNV residents to make sure the job training and employment brought about by the new direction of this economy begins with the people that need help most. We are broadening our community building focus to change the perception of green collar jobs. Focus groups have revealed that not only did people not know what a green job was, they did not like the way the term sounded. the dc project is working to identify these messaging gaps and implement thoughtful, effective and up-to-date web-based video, print media outreach and new media networking. We are launching our vision, plan, and story, courtesy of sponsorship from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG), on March 3rd at the “Green Affordable Housing and Jobs Forum.”
Washington DC is a city poised on the brink of economic transformation. In 2009 alone it is predicted that there will be over 24,000 green jobs created in the city. In the next 10 years an estimated 166,540 total jobs will be created in DC. In a city with just under 600,000 residents, these numbers are staggering. the dc project is fundamentally committed to ensuring that the possibilities of our green economic future are extended to those who need them most. We are living in the midst of an action-oriented transition, full of enormous opportunity and possibility, and on January 20th, 2009 Americans and indeed the entire world heard the call to action. Let’s address our two most pressing concerns: poverty and climate change and together let us hopefully, practically, and urgently echo Muhammad Yunis:
“One day our grandchildren will go to the museum to see what poverty was like"
