Why are you interested in the Gandhi-King Community?
I am an artist based in Auckland, New Zealand.

I happened upon Gandhi almost by accident. My sister had brought me the Attenborough DVD 'Gandhi'. By nature I have trouble sleeping, so as a remedy I started watching the DVD to get to sleep. This more or less worked, but by now has the dubious benefit of allowing me to watch (at least part of) the movie upwards of 100 times. Only after such a prolonged exposure did I realise that I was actually very interested.

Subsequently I have read Gandhi's autobiography, and am making my way though Tendaulkars eight volume biography, as well as dipping into the 90 volume collected writings at the University Library.

I have a BFA, PgDipFA and an MFA (FA=Fine Arts) and in the following years will be undertaking a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and a Bachelor of Arts, Majoring in Politics and Philosophy.

I am a prolific artist as well as being engaged in the arts communities in various structural ways. I set up a not-for-profit Gallery, registered as a charitable trust, called Newcall Gallery, alongside eight other like-minded people. www.newcallgallery.org.nz

This gallery is an artist-run space and focuses on those whose art would not naturally attract a lot of money or who have significant projects to offer that cannot find another home.

I almost exclusively show my own art in artist-run spaces, as an alternative to the moneyed world of dealer galleries. Though I do make exception for public galleries.

Currently I am editing two publications on the structural and political elements of artistic practice, to be published later this year.

I am keen to make the acquaintances of interesting and interested people, with whom to share ideas and discuss possibilities.

I live in New Zealand, which geographically speaking is a utopic location, though it's physical location and burdensome distance means we insulate ourselves to a degree of the ability of effect on political matters. We as a people are like a great many nations, far too ambivalent and resigned to existant power structures.

Dear John,

Your artwork is beautiful and I share your appreciation for the Gandhi movie.

I am glad to have found a peace advocate in New Zealand. I am attempting to launch a global campaign to observe October 2nd - International Day of Non-Violence. It would be wonderful if you can help put New Zealand on the meetup map here: www.meetup.com/idnv

As an example, how wonderful it would be if you could have an artists for peace public exhibition on October 2nd to observe this day!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Arch
