Why are you interested in the Gandhi-King Community?
I was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up, mostly, there and in Ghana, West Africa. For a long time Iʻve lived in California, and, more recently, in Hawaiʻi

.At a very early age, through my family, I became involved in
social action, especially the peace and civil rights movements. More recently I have also become involved with issues concerning the right treatment of, and relationship, to non-human species, and the environment.

I attended San Francisco State and Stanford University, taught at the University of California - San Diego, and then for many years in the English Department and the African and African-American Studies Program at Stanford University, and also in the Creative Writing Program. My main areas of interest were Third World Writing, and African, African-American and Caribbean literature, always from a historical and cultural perspective.

I am the author of a number of articles and two books, one on the Guyanese novelist Wilson Harris called Wilson Harris and the Modern Tradition: A New Architecture of the World, and the other a novel, A Kind of Wrath, forthcoming this year. Right now I live in Menlo Park with my husband and three dogs. Iʻm at work on my next novel in a quintet, and on the first novel in a mystery series, a bow to one of my favorite avocations — detective fiction.
