Why are you interested in the Gandhi-King Community?
Ré Phillips grew up in small town Covington, Georgia. Dissatisfied with the limited demographics of the southern, small town as well as the lack of opportunity for youth, she chose to leave the southern state of Georgia to further her education at Stanford University. Since coming to Stanford, Phillips has immersed herself in the study of international relations, Black studies, and Spanish and Chinese languages, and has engaged in opportunities to travel.

World travels have been extremely meaningful and key in the formation of her view that the arts has the propensity to be an igniter of social and political change. Traveling to South Africa in 2006 with Talisman was her first experience promoting social and cultural unity, empowerment, and understanding through art. In the spring of 2007, she traveled to China to perform in Professor Clayborne Carson's “Passages of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” alongside members of the National Theater Company of China, marking the first time in history that African Americans and Chinese persons shared a stage in China. In 2008, she attended an international a conference in Sierra Leone: “The Role of Youth in Post Conflict Resolution”. This summer 2009, Phillips will travel to Kampala, Uganda to create a performance piece with Makere University students.

Phillips’ passion for politics, art, and the intersectionality of the two is also reflected in her affiliation with campus organizations. She has been a dedicated member of Talisman A Capella, Stanford Gospel Ensemble, Stanford Gospel Choir, Ram’s Head Theatrical Society’s spring musical Aida, the ASSU, and the Black Student Union. Within the ASSU, Phillips was an elected member of the undergraduate Senate, She served as Chair of the Administration and Rules Committee, a member of the Constitutional Council Selection Committee, ASSU Arts Grant Board, and the ASSU Faculty Diversity Commission.
