Primary Social Change Interest
Social Justice
Why are you interested in the Gandhi-King Community?
I teach modern U.S. History and African American Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My main areas of interest are: race relations, civil rights/Black Power era, social movements, electoral politics, the 1960s, visual culture, music, America During the Cold War and African Americans in the 'Jazz Age.' I have a new book out with Harvard University Press, "The Selma of the North: Civil Rights Insurgency in the North." (see: http://www.amazon.com/Selma-North-Rights-Insurgency-Milwaukee/dp/06...)

I also work on issues of urban inequality and social justice in the community. I am a board member of Nebraskans for Peace, the oldest state-wide peace and justice organization in the U.S. I am also a board member for Nebraskans for Justice, an organization dedicated to racial justice within the criminal justice system and to the defense of Ed Poindexter and Mondo we langa, two former Black Panthers who have been unjustly imprisoned for 38 years. Amnesty International recognizes them as prisoners of conscience. Recently, I taught a 7-week class at First United Methodist Church on Dr. King's "theology of non-violence," where we also explored the influence of Gandhi on Dr. King.
