For Global Peace with Social Justice in a Sustainable Environment

The Research Centre for Women’s Studies, SNDT W omen’s University, in collaboration with the Gujarat Research Society, PGSR Department of SNDT Women’s University and Mr. Mihir Desai, Advocate, held the Second Neera Desai Memorial Lecture at the Juhu Campus on 23 September 2011. The Hon. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vandana Chakraborty delivered the Presidential Address, while Prof. Maithreyi Krishnaraj, Former Director of RCWS was the Chief Guest. Dr. Jayati Ghosh, Professor of Economics, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Studies, JNU, New Delhi, was the Keynote Speaker.
Prof. Veena Poonacha, Director, RCWS, in her introductory speech, spoke of Dr. Neera Desai’s personality and her many contributions to Women’s Studies. The Hon. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vandana Chakraborty stressed on the unique role of SNDT in imparting education for women in her Presidential Address. Prof. Vibhuti Patel, Director, PGSR, while introducing Prof. Ghosh, said that she, besides having many achievements in the field of Economics, was also a member of the National Knowledge Commission and National Commission on Agriculture. Dr. Meena Gopal introduced the Chief Guest, Dr. Maithreyi Krishnaraj, former Director of RCWS. Prof. Krishnaraj stressed that the feminist concept of work has had a marked influence on State policies.
