International Nonviolence Summer Institute 2011

Nonviolence revolution is on the rise, and nonviolence  training is critically important. The University of Rhode Island is pleased to present the 10th International Nonviolence Summer Institute, offering three training programs based on the principles and practices of nonviolence as derived from the methods and philosophy espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Senior Facilitator and Lead Trainer Bernard LaFayette, Jr. Ed. D. Friend and confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Movement activist, minister, educator, lecturer. Global authority on nonviolent social change.

This program is specifically designed for those interested in acquiring the skills necessary for promoting peace, nonviolence & social change. The Institute provides an open, supportive, and interactive training environment. Past participants have consisted of persons from various backgrounds, professions, cultures, and regions of the world.

Introduction to Kingian Nonviolence (June 6-7)

This training introduces key concepts and important background information about nonviolence, including core values, conflict analysis, nonviolent historical movements, dynamics of social change, and study of several of the most important essays written by Dr. King.

Level I Nonviolence Training Certification (June 6-17)

WEEK ONE. The initial week of training coincides with the introductory training in  Participants learn through a combination of instructional and interactive small group activities and training exercises.

WEEK TWO. The second week of training prepares participants to become certified trainers capable of delivering a 2-Day Introductory Nonviolence Workshop. This portion of the training involves practice presentations of workshop sessions.

Level II Advanced Nonviolence Training Certification (June 13-17)

The course offers in-depth study of Kingian nonviolence methodology, including a review of the Level I curriculum, historical and attitudinal research, and strategies for community organizing and mobilization. Emphasis is on leadership development and continued involvement in nonviolence education and training efforts is expected.
