The Gandhi-King Community

For Global Peace with Social Justice in a Sustainable Environment

Hello Everyone,

I am at the moment working on a Tribute to Martin Luther King Jnr, this is a Tribute project which will take place in a local School in Birmingham using Drama & Storytelling to maybe recreate a event or events from Dr Kings life, Children will have the opportunity to explore Dr Kings Legacy and be inspired at the same time. Other Schools will also be looking at other figures from history including Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X & Bhagat Singh. This is a 7 week project and at the end everyone will get a chance to see & appreciate each others work, I'm looking forward to this project as this is something which I have a real passion for.

Many thanks for your comments Shara, your right it is Cool & inspiring, using roleplay the children recreated the the Rosa Parks bus boycott incident and how Dr King was there and how this was a defining moment in his journey. The School that myself and a Story Teller are working in is a special School for children with learning disabilities, it was really good for me to see them playing Rosa Parks & Dr King, the bus driver, passengers etc as they were starting to think what it felt like all those years ago & to think like the characters too and to ask questions about why it was aloud to happen in the first place. For many of the Children this is their first encounter with Racism and the effects it has on the individual and the community in general. These Children are themselves on a journey over the next seven weeks to discover more about Dr King and his life, in the next lesson they will be looking at Sit Ins and what impact they had, as they are Children it will be good to get an idea of what they feel about this. I will be using the lesson plans that you mention as they can get them thinking even more about the forces at work, I had a idea about the letter from Birmingham Jail - imagine if they were in a cell with Dr King, what would they write? so there is alot to explore, I'll defniately keep you updated on how the Tribute is going, all the best.

This sounds really cool! What a creative and meaningful way to teach and interact with history. Some of the Liberation Curriculum's lessons (which are designed primarily for middle school and high school age kids) involve acting out events from the Civil Rights Movement- you can check out these lesson plans online at http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/lc/index. The one I had in mind that utilizes role play and acting out a historical event in order to better understand the forces at work is about the Birmingham movement: http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/resources/article/letter_from_birmingham_jail_role_play/
It would be great to hear how the MLK Tribute project goes, keep us updated!
